4 driving hazards you may face in the winter months

Snow storms may not be as common in Tennessee as they are in states farther north, but they do happen, and the impact can be severe. To help you prepare this year, here are a few hazards you may face:

1. Abandoned cars. When a blizzard strikes, drivers who get stuck may abandon their cars and seek shelter. This creates a chaotic and messy situation where accidents are likely.

2. Ice-covered hills. Even if you know it's icy out, it's hard to know just how bad it is until you get to a hill covered in ice. This is especially bad if there's a stoplight at the bottom. Even with the brake pedal pushed to the floor, you may slide right down that hill. If you stop, another driver may slide into your car.

3. Black ice. It's nearly invisible and very dangerous. Trying to stop or turn can be impossible. Many accidents happen on black ice, especially when going around curves. This is why it's best to assume that you're on ice even if the road looks clear.

4. Limited visibility. When people are in a hurry, they may brush some of the snow and ice off the car, but not all of it. They'll try to look through that little hole in the window, but it may not be enough. Their vision to the side is severely limited.

Drivers who are not prepared cause many accidents when a winter storm strikes. If you're hit by one of these drivers this winter, and you suffer serious injuries as a result, you may be able to seek compensation through civil litigation.
