Know your rights if you’re accused of drug charges in Tennessee

On Behalf of | Jan 4, 2018 | Drug Crimes |

There are 95 counties in Tennessee, which ranks as the 16th largest state by population in the country. Since there are many people in the state and the state has connecting highways along with international airports, drugs are often a problem. Drugs come into the state through the international airports, by car, truck and bus, through the mail and by package delivery services.

Both Memphis and Nashville have international airports where drugs could enter the state. The drugs most often found in the airport include cocaine and methamphetamine, although many kinds are discovered.

Sometimes, drugs are brought into the state by land. For instance, individuals driving up from Florida may bring opioids into the state for sale. People using semi-trucks could ship thousands of pounds of drugs directly into the state. Railroads aren’t used as often, but they may also play a role in the volume of drugs entering the state.

Cocaine and marijuana are both popular drugs in the state. These drugs tend to come into the state thanks to Mexican groups, though they can be brought in by people or gangs of any kind. As of the early 2000s, some of the gangs found in Tennessee included the Bloods and Crips, Mara Salvatrucha and Vice Lords.

When you face drug charges, you may face charges for being in a gang, transporting drugs or other crimes as well. Know your rights. You have a right to speak with an attorney; you don’t need to do anything that could incriminate you. The right help can give you a chance at defending yourself and preventing a bias in court.
