Types of traumatic brain injuries suffered in car accidents

On Behalf of | Apr 12, 2018 | blog |

Your brain is essentially what you makes you a human being, as it is responsible for your emotions, sensation, movement, intelligence and consciousness. This is why injury to the brain can be so life-altering.

Sometimes traumatic brain injuries happen in Tennessee due to another person’s carelessness. For instance, maybe another driver struck your car and caused you to suffer a brain injury as a result. In this situation, you have the right to seek to hold the party accountable for your injuries.

Concussions

The most common form of traumatic brain injury is a concussion. A concussion can easily happen if your head suddenly makes contact with a hard surface. Even though a loss of consciousness usually accompanies a concussion, you may still suffer a concussion without necessarily losing consciousness. Instead, you may experience a wide range of other symptoms, such as a foggy mind, confusion and dizziness.

Diffuse axonal injury

This is another type of traumatic brain injury that can happen as a result of rotational forces or rigorous shaking. These forces essentially create tears in your brain’s structures, with the edges of your brain being sheared. The tearing leads to neuro-chemical disruptions in your brain, thus potentially resulting in permanent damage to the brain. You may even experience a coma. Common symptoms include olfactory disruption, motor sensation disruption, memory disruption and motor function disruption.

Contusions

You have suffered a contusion in a car wreck if localized bleeding has occurred in your brain. A doctor may need to surgically remove your contusion, as the formation of a blood clot at the contusion site could potentially be fatal. In some cases, if your brain strikes your skull’s opposite side due to a particularly jolting blow, a second contusion might form in this part of the brain as well.

Your rights as a victim following an accident

If another individual’s negligence caused you to suffer a brain injury, you may choose to file a personal injury claim against him or her, seeking the reimbursement of monetary damages. A claim that is successfully fought might lead to a monetary award that could help with covering your medical costs and other losses related to your traumatic brain injury. No amount of money can undo the events that led to your injury and suffering, but it may help you to feel a sense of justice in light of the ordeal.
