What are the 3 most common motorcycle injuries?

On Behalf of | Jun 24, 2019 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Now that summer is in full swing in Tennessee, you likely spend a good deal of time riding your motorcycle. If you are like most such enthusiasts, nothing gets your juices flowing like the call of the open road.

You need to remember, however, that your motorcycle offers you very little protection. Consequently, OurEverydayLife.com warns you that you can suffer severe injuries should you crash. The most common include the following:

  1. Head injuries
  2. Broken bones
  3. Road rash

1. Head injuries

It goes without saying that you should always wear a helmet when you ride. But unfortunately, even if you do, your helmet cannot fully protect your head in a crash, especially while riding at highway speeds. When your head hits the pavement, a guard rail or a tree, the impact can result in your receiving a traumatic brain injury, one where your brain begins dysfunctioning. A TBI can have long-lasting effects, up to and including your need for lifetime care.

2. Fractures

Your arms and legs are at high risk for fracturing in a motorcycle crash. Since your bike cannot stand without support, it likely will fall on top of you in the event of a crash, pinning you underneath it. Actually, you will be lucky if only one of your arms or legs breaks. You could suffer a spinal cord injury that would result in your spending the rest of your life in a wheelchair.

3. Road rash

Despite the protective clothing you should always wear while riding, if you slide along the road during a high-speed crash, this clothing likely will not be sufficient to prevent your suffering severe road rash. This, in turn, could result in your having to undergo multiple surgeries and skin grafts to repair and minimize the damage. At the very least, you can expect lasting scars on your body.
