Is Xanax addictive?

Despite its therapeutic uses, Xanax also has great abuse potential. While thought to be less addictive than opiates, Xanax addiction also causes physical and emotional withdrawal effects, which sometimes can be severe. It’s important to take medication as directed by your doctor to prevent the risk of addiction. Prescription drugs should also never be bought from illegal sources or used without a prescription.

Xanax belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. As a treatment for anxiety disorders, it reduces stress and causes a relaxed feeling. When abused, abruptly stopping the drug can lead to a host of uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms. It’s also associated with a range of side effects, which become more prevalent when the drug is abused. Along with a relaxed feeling, Xanax can also cause mood swings and irritability in longer-term users. It can also cause problems with memory and focus. Physical symptoms include nausea and vomiting, a risk of seizures, tremors, and shortness of breath.

Xanax has the potential to be abused to the point where a full-blown addiction occurs. Addiction is not the same for everyone, but there are a lot of common factors among people with addiction problems. Addicts need to do more and more of their drug of choice just to achieve the same effect. Risk-taking behavior is also more common, especially when it comes to obtaining money for the drug. You might also find yourself doing the drug every day or even driving while impaired.

Withdrawing from a Xanax addiction is more challenging when compared to other drugs. That’s why medically-assisted detox in a hospital setting is recommended. Doctors can monitor a person’s withdrawal effects to prevent any serious health issues. Medication can also be used to control withdrawal effects, which makes the process a little easier.
