How can I spot a drunk driver?

On Behalf of | Oct 10, 2022 | Drunk Driving |

Keeping Tennessee’s roadways safe is a concern for all of us. Everybody knows that a drunk driver is a great danger to themselves and other people. Of course, the best way to prevent drunk driving is to make sure that you have an alternative plan to get home, should you be going out for a few drinks.

It is also important to know the signs of a drunk driver. Fortunately, drunk drivers often make themselves very obvious. According to MADD, drunk drivers exhibit certain characteristics, and there are maneuvers you can take to keep yourself safe if you see one.

What are some signs of a drunk driver?

Drunk drivers are not at full faculty, and thus will drive erratically. For instance, they may accelerate or decelerate quickly, or be driving in and out of traffic lanes. Drunk drivers may also swerve frequently, and turn abruptly with no warning. Many drunk drivers even drive well below the speed limit, due to their impairment.

What should I do if I see a drunk driver?

The first thing is to get away from the other driver. Do not try to pass him or her, nor get the driver’s attention. This will only put you at risk. Instead, slow down and try to get the license plate number of the car, as well as note any characteristics about the car itself (including car make and model, as well as color). Call 911 and give this information to the police.

Drunk drivers are a menace on the roads, and all of us should do our part to help keep them from behind the wheel.
