How can motorcyclists stay safe on the roads?

On Behalf of | Aug 1, 2017 | Motorcycle Accidents |

As a motorcyclist, your main concern is staying safe on the roads. You know there are dangerous drivers out there, and you just want to get where you’re going without trouble. Is that a realistic expectation?

Based on data from 2014, motorcyclist deaths happen up to 27 times more commonly than deaths with other vehicles. As a result of this data, it is clear that everyone needs to take steps to keep motorcyclists safe. How can you help?

There are many ways to keep yourself and others safe when motorcycles are present. From maintaining visibility to following traffic safety tips, the possible ways to lower risk are numerous. Here are just three.

  • Wear the right protection

The right motorcycle protection doesn’t only protect you in a fall. Good protection may also have reflective strips or be a bright color to enhance your visibility. If you wear a helmet when you ride, make sure the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) symbol is on the back. That symbol, marked DOT, shows that the helmet meets federal requirements.

  • Avoid alcohol and drugs

If you plan to go out for a drink, don’t decide to drive home. Driving while intoxicated puts you and those you care about at risk. It also puts others on the roads at risk of serious injuries.

  • Practice, practice, practice

Finally, whether you drive a car, truck or motorcycle, practice makes perfect. Take training courses and practice driving new cars or motorcycles somewhere safe before heading out onto highways and the roads.

These are a few tips that can help you stay safe. If you’re still struck, you do have a right to look into your legal options.
