Driving a motorcycle has the potential to be a lot of fun, but when you’re riding in the winter months, that drive automatically becomes more dangerous. With the potential for cold weather to impact your ability to drive safely, you need to be sure you dress appropriately.
Layering for warmth is a vital step in the winter months. Even if it’s 50 or 60 degrees outside, the wind makes it feel much cooler. Instead of worrying about the potential for hypothermia, wear boots, pants, a jacket and gloves. You want to keep your core temperature warm, so you don’t end up feeling cold too quickly.
On top of staying warm, layering is a good idea to protect you from hazards in the event of a crash. Jeans, for instance, covered by leather protective chaps could keep you warm and add a layer of protection against road rash. Gloves protect fingers and palms if you try to catch yourself during a fall. Likewise, heavy boots protect you better than gym shoes.
Even the kind of helmet you wear in the winter matters. Choose one that keeps the air out and one that doesn’t fog up. Try a pinlock visor; it helps prevent fogging in your helmet while allowing you to keep the visor shut enough to keep the draft out. By preventing cold wind from getting in your eyes, they will water less and allow you to see the road better.
Staying safe this winter takes precautions and vigilance. If you’re struck by a vehicle, remember that you have a chance to make a claim.
