3 riding tips to keep you safer on your motorcycle

On Behalf of | May 3, 2018 | Motorcycle Accidents |

If you’re new to your motorcycle, you may not yet be comfortable riding in all circumstances. It’s good to admit that and not to drive during high-traffic times or when you’re concerned that you may not be skilled enough to handle the ride. Beyond your own limitations is the risk that other drivers may not see you, which could also put you in danger.

If you’re too focused on handling your motorcycle, you may not notice trouble up ahead. Here are a few tips that can help you get more comfortable and stay safer on the roads.

1. Get the right bike

If you’re new to riding, you probably don’t need the motorcycle with the highest horsepower. Look for a motorcycle that fits you well. You need to be able to place both of your feet flat on the ground and not just your tiptoes. Make sure the handlebars and controls are easy to reach and use while you ride.

2. Get anti-lock brakes

There is a good chance you’ll be “throwing on the brakes” at some point, so it’s a good idea to get anti-lock brakes to prevent you from being thrown or locking up your bike. Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) help keep you in control and have proven to reduce the likelihood of being in a fatal crash by 37 percent.

3. Take more driving courses

There are a number of motorcycle classes around you, and you should invest some time and money into them. The more practice you get, the safer you’ll be.

If you end up getting hit by another driver, your chances of survival are higher if you’re educated on how to react. After you are stable, you can look into making a claim for compensation, too.
