Tennessean man charged for fatal DUI crash

DUIs are taken seriously for a number of reasons, but the most prominent is that driving while intoxicated or impaired can lead to serious crashes that harm you or others. There are laws to prevent drunk driving because one person's bad choices are likely to affect others.

Not all cases involving DUIs come from intoxication from alcohol, though. In some instances, it's drugs that play a role in a case. This could make it more complicated to show that the individual was impaired knowingly.

Take for example this case involving a Tennessee man who has been charged with DUI. The 24-year-old Chapel Hill resident was arrested last month after law enforcement officers discovered that he was in possession of a schedule VI drug.

The man, who was traveling on Highway 41A, was driving a vehicle while hauling a boat behind him. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the man crossed into the wrong lane and into oncoming traffic. His vehicle hit a Ford Escape. Inside, the driver, a 72-year-old woman, was killed. The 71-year-old passenger was injured but survived.

The young man currently faces charges for possessing drugs, drug paraphernalia, vehicular homicide and DUI. It's not clear if there was alcohol in his system or if he was impaired by the drug that was found at the scene.

If you are facing a DUI and related charges, remember that you have a right to a strong defense and an unbiased trial should the day come. An experienced Tennessee attorney can work with you to prepare a strong case and fight to reduce the risk of a conviction.
